Manage databases

Create a Postgres or libSQL database from a project's Databases tab, connect to it, branch it, turn on the Data API and issue libSQL tokens.

Manage databases

Every project has a Databases tab in the dashboard sidebar. It lists the project's serverless Postgres database and its libSQL databases. Every member of the workspace can view them; only workspace owners and admins can create, change or delete anything.

Create a Postgres database

  1. Open the project and choose Databases, then Create Postgres database.
  2. Enter a name, pick a compute size and when the compute should suspend. The Postgres version is fixed at 17.
  3. Choose Create database. A dialog shows the owner role, its password and a ready-to-use connection string.

Copy the password now. It is shown once and cannot be retrieved later; if you lose it, reset it (see below).

A project has one Postgres database. It starts with a main branch, a compute endpoint, an owner role (neondb_owner) and a database (neondb). The compute starts idle and wakes on the first connection.

While the database is being created, a progress bar at the top of the tab follows the operation until it finishes. If you start a second change while one is running, the tab says Another change is in progress: wait for the first to finish and try again.

Connect

Open the endpoint with Connect, choose a role and a database, then copy one of the strings. Replace <password> with the role's password.

StringUse it for
Direct connection ep-<id>.pg.alloydb.netLong-lived connections, migrations, psql
Pooled connection ep-<id>-pooler.pg.alloydb.netServerless functions and many short connections (PgBouncer)
SQL over HTTP https://ep-<id>.pg.alloydb.net/sqlEnvironments that cannot open a TCP connection
Data API URLREST access, shown only after you enable the Data API

Use Start and Suspend on an endpoint to wake or stop its compute by hand. A suspended endpoint wakes by itself on the next connection.

Reset a role password

Choose Reset password next to a role and confirm. Applications that use the old password lose access until you update them. The new password is shown once.

Branch a database

Choose New branch on the database card.

  • Now forks the parent's latest data.
  • A past point (LSN) forks from an earlier Postgres log sequence number (for example 0/16B5A50) inside the project's history window.

Leave Create a compute endpoint ticked to connect to the branch straight away. You can delete a branch (not the default one, and not one that has branches of its own) by typing its name to confirm.

Turn on the Data API

Choose Enable Data API next to a database. When the operation finishes, the database shows a Data API badge and the endpoint's connection panel lists the URL, which has the form https://ep-<id>.apirest.alloydb.net/<database>/rest/v1. Choose Disable Data API to turn it off again.

Create a libSQL database and issue tokens

  1. Open the libSQL tab and choose New libSQL database. Use lowercase letters, digits and hyphens.
  2. Copy the database URL, libsql://<name>.lite.alloydb.net.
  3. Choose Issue token, pick read-only or read-write access and an expiry. The token is shown once.
  4. Pass both to any libSQL client:
import { createClient } from "@libsql/client";

const client = createClient({
  url: "libsql://notes-acme.lite.alloydb.net",
  authToken: process.env.LIBSQL_TOKEN,
});

Tokens are signed, not stored, so a single token cannot be revoked. It works until it expires, so prefer short expiries and issue a new token when you rotate.

Delete

Deleting a Postgres database, a branch or a libSQL database asks you to type its name first. Deletion removes the data permanently.
